Lifeguards at Muriwai have started their patrol season. They have been well-prepared with a number of training and surf sport events. They include: The junior camp at Waipu for 14 to 18-year-olds to sharpen up or teach new skills for a summer of patrolling or for their lifeguard award. Activities for the 24 participants included ball, swim- ming, running, paddling boards and skis and honing some IRB and first aid skills. The camp was run by Melody Edwards, Ashlie Nobilo, David Butt and Rashidah Hudson. Fiona Whyte and other seniors also helped out. We were also lucky enough to have the Danger Beach television film crew along for the ride so they ve captured all that camp goodness -- coming to a screen near you soon! Fiona says. The King of Rangitoto event was a good one for Muriwai with the women s senior crew nabbing first place in the boat section. The gruelling event involves a paddle or row to Rangitoto where two crew members run to the summit, run back down and row/paddle back. The Muriwai men s senior boat crew was 8th while Brydhi Stark and Emma Wilson were 6th in the double surf ski. Meanwhile, nor-west workplaces can support Bethells and Muriwai lifeguards by registering for National Jandal Day. View www.nationaljandalday. co.nz for a supporters pack. Erosion forces $5.5m surf club move By MICHELE ONG Work on a $5.5 million new Muriwai surf club will begin in July. The club is being relocated because its base at Muriwai Beach s southern end is in danger of erosion. The problem is so bad the club- house looks like it s about to fall into the ocean, club project co- ordinator Tim Jago says. About $150,000 from the Rod- ney District Council has been made available for the building project. The Auckland Regional Council also granted about $590,000 for siteworks and utilities reticu- lation in June. About $440,000 has been set aside for roading and wastewater works. The remaining $150,000 will be used to demolish the existing clubhouse and turn it into useful parkland, Mr Jago says. The new building on a 4000 square metre site near the Muriwai Village Green and Muriwai Golf Course will com- prise a lifeguard operations base, members clubhouse and a multipurpose community and education facility. There is a dedicated classroom to support school and education groups on field trips to Muriwai. There will also be bunkroom- style accommodation for up to 40 guests and a community lounge catering for up to 120 sit-down diners or more than 200 theatre style. The overall cost is estimated at $5.5m. The cost to the club is estimated at around $4m and it needs to raise another $3.3m. And they will have to get cre- ative in raising funds during this flat economy , Mr Jago says. The challenge is for local com- munities to raise about $500,000 over the next year to help with the project. Visit www.thesurfclubmuriwai. org to donate or for details. Get jogging or walking for health Nor-west residents are welcome to pick up their fitness and get motivated with the Massey joggers and walkers.
