Kiwis are considered mad about sport, but are we aware of how import- ant early learning skills in hand-eye coordi- nation, motor and manipulation are to children s physical, men- tal and emotional growth? Perhaps not, according to SPARC research, which revealed that more than 90 percent of New Zealand 12-year- olds lack basic skills in these vital areas. Which is where Play- ball Rodney, and the Playball sports teachers Keith and Rebecca Enoka come in! Playball aims to teach vital skills to children aged from two up to nine years of age, through an enjoyable programme of sport and movement exercises that teach and refine these skills. Playball is a pro- gramme that children love, as they rapidly progress from can t to can-do attitudes and experience the satisfac- tion of success! Playball has been a proven success for 25 years, taught in countries from USA to Southern Africa, Eng- land to Israel and Ireland to New Zealand. Keith and Rebecca bought the Rodney fran- chise last year with a desire to work with chil- dren -- Keith has a coaching background at both junior and senior levels. They teach groups of school or pre-school chil- dren in age-appropriate classes with a positive energy and a friendly encouraging manner that has to be seen to be fully appreciated. They have a great knack of getting onside with the young ones, teaching them tech- niques which lead to results that the children are immensely proud of. Parents also see a posi- tive difference in their children. Exercises over the 40-minute sessions include games involving throwing and catching, jumping, crawling and landing, running and dodging -- using a wide variety of props and sports equipment. At the same time chil- dren are learning important life skills, such as listening and fol- lowing instructions, teamwork and sports- manship -- but most of all, by having FUN! Structured classes for all the 2-to-9 age groups are organised through Rodney schools, daycare and kindies. Keith and Rebecca also run Sunday classes at the Kumeu Sports Centre, so you can see them in action. New Playball Rodney classes will be starting in Term 1 of 2011. Phone Rebecca on 021 530-260 for more information, or visit www.pbrodney.co.nz.
