Photo: GEMMA WOOD A Shelly Beach child was airlifted to Starship hospital on November 10 suffering asthma complications. A Westpac rescue helicopter landed at the beach carpark at 8.09am after the emergency call at 7.44am. Crewman Mark Cannell says it took about 14 minutes to transport the patient to hospital. We kept the rotors rolling. It s quite a bit quicker than using the roads. The Shelly Beach volunteer fire brigade and an ambulance also attended. The local fire brigade had set up a landing pad for us, Mr Cannell says. Bikers do poker run Fire run: The annual 5 Station Poker Run is on Sunday with proceeds going to the Kaukapakapa volunteer fire brigade. The roar of motorbikes will engulf nor-west fire stations this weekend. Two-hundred bikes are expected turn out for the fifth annual 5 Station Poker Run on Sunday. Kaukapakapa volunteer fire brigade is hosting the event which kick starts at the Kaipara Coast Highway station at 10am. Riders can assemble from 9am. The Helensville station is the first stop followed by Shelly Beach then Muriwai where there will be a barbecue. A ride to Kumeu is next before a loop back to Kaukapakapa around 2pm. There will be spot prizes and a meal supplied by local farmers and businesses. The five brigades take turns hosting the run. Proceeds go to the hosting crew. Last year $6000 was raised for a four-wheel-drive vehicle for the Helensville sta- tion. Riders are given a playing card at each station and the win- ner of the major prize is whoever has the best poker hand at the end. Tickets can be bought at Bike- sport in Helensville, any of the five stations or online at www.5stationpokerrun.co.nz until tomorrow.
