A small town is celebrating its 150th anniversary. The Kaukapakapa festivities begin on Saturday with a free fun bowling afternoon at the club with a prize for best costume. On November 26 mem- ories will be rekindled when early and current settlers gather at the hall. One of the features is a video presentation fea- turing historical photo- graphs collected by Alan Jordan for the 1960 cen- tennial celebrations. Although Andrew Bonar arrived in 1858 as the first of the European settlers in the area, Kaukapakapa as a settlement did not begin until 1860 with the arrival of Mr and Mrs George Dye and their son Frank, Captain William Dawson and Mrs Daw- son, Mr Charles Simcock and his brother Joseph. There are a lot of yarns to be told. We're expecting a good turn- out,'' Athol Mclachlan says. Tables will be set up bearing the names of roads named after set- tlers, so people can also become better acquaint- ed with their neigh- bours.'' On November 27, the hall transforms into a luncheon party. In the wider Kaukapakapa district, visitors will be able to follow a historic venue map visiting 15 signifi- cant places of interest. On November 28 there will be a combined church service in the hall. Parishioners from the Methodist church and St Cuthbert's Pres- byterian Church will arrive on foot or horse and trap. The service will be preceded by a powhiri. In the afternoon, participants can dress up for an 1860s settler-style family picnic at Sinclair Park. The park was orig- inally opened at Kauka- pakapa's Centennial in February 1960.
