Although less than an hour from Auckland, by any measure MacNuts Cafe qualifies as a dining destination off the beaten track. Located in sun-kissed South Head, just a short drive from Parakai, it offers a spectacular dine-out experience. After a leisurely drive up SH16, then South Head Rd with vistas of Kaipara Harbour and lush overhang, you ll find MacNuts Cafe overlooking the secret garden that is Auckland s closest macadamia orchard. You could sit under the huge alfresco deck or out on the paved terrace and admire the beautiful view over the orch- ard and ponds framed by tall trees, while partaking of the range of delicious foods. Or better still, bring a rug and they will provide you a picnic basket lunch to enjoy among the gardens. The cafe is now run by couple Cherie (who has worked at Sails restaurant, Stamford Plaza Hotel and at the Hilton Gold Coast) and Matt McGerty, who took over in September. They both agree the first duty of a cafe is to make diners feel they have come to the right place. We love to create fresh, delicious food and aim to make our guests feel wel- come and relaxed, says Cherie. The menu caters for a range of tastes. They are loyal to the local produce of the area, like the freshest free range eggs, locally sourced meats and produce. Here you ll find Cherie s background in fine dining rubbing shoulders with hearty New Zealand fare. A peek into their picnic hamper also gives a glimpse of the rich menu. You have Merlot and black pepper sausages, chutney, homemade potato salad, prosciutto, brie cheese, baguettes, cher- ries, strawberries, grapes, Lindt D or chocolates, and choice of drinks from the menu. You can t put a price on that but at $40 a hamper for two, it s great value. MacNuts is the perfect venue for your Christmas party and private functions. But book now or you d be hard pressed to find a slot later in the year. The cafe is also one of the few places west of Auckland that offers High Tea. Enjoying a renaissance, it is increasingly popular for celebrating birthdays. It features club sandwiches, vol au vents, frittata, cup cakes, and scones with jam and cream, lamingtons and petit fours, all beautifully presented on 3-tiered stands. The fact that they bake everything on site to serve fresh on arrival is an indi- cation of the lengths Cherie and Matt go to ensure a memorable day trip. MacNuts Cafe is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am-5pm. Located 11 minutes from Parakai on South Head Road.
