OPERATION THE MAD BUTCHER AND SUBURBAN NEWSPAPERS TRUST COMMUNITY Sir Peter Charles Leitch KNZM, QSM. Chairman, The Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust Mayor urges all Aucklanders to help out Operation Heal is a great example of people working together to make a real dif- ference to the lives of New Zealanders. The Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Com- munity Trust launched this project to raise money to buy a vital piece of equipment for the National Burn Centre at Middlemore Hospital. The high-tech microscope will be used for life-changing plastic and reconstructive surgery. It s great to see the Nor- west News working with its sister publications to get people around the region to pitch in and donate money for this crucial microscope. My dream for Auckland is to see organisations, busi- nesses and communities working together to make this the world s most liveable city. I m happy to support projects like Oper- ation Heal which embody a real community spirit. I encourage people to sup- port this cause. -- Len Brown A firefighter's story P3 See Len Brown at www.nor-west news.co.nz. Diamond duo: Nathan Barrack and Sacha Malkin, pictured with their 18-month-old son Eddie, are competing to win a 22-carat diamond ring. Photo: CAROLYN THOMAS Love is in the air: Dressed as superheroes, Nathan Barrack and Sacha Malkin took photos across Auckland including with the C130 Hercules at the Whenuapai airbase. A couple of superheroes By CAROLYN THOMAS ORGANISING a wedding is hard enough. But lovebirds Nathan Barrack and Sacha Malkin have also donned superhero costumes, cross-dressed and publicly shared pet names for each other in the lead-up to their December 4 nuptials. The Whenuapai couple are competing to win a 22-carat diamond ring in the Michael Hill World s Best Couple search. They are in the top six and are beating thousands of couples worldwide who have to do 16 challenges. Voting is online through twitter and Facebook and closes on Sunday. It s pretty full-on, Sacha, 21, says. As long as you re in the top six you ve got a chance. The couple has already come through hurdles includ- ing a long-distance relation- ship, teenage pregnancy and Nathan s demanding job as an air force co-pilot. The pair met in Blenheim four years ago when Nathan, 25, was training and Sacha was still at secondary school. Nate said: It s my 21st birthday, do I get a birthday kiss , Sacha says. She followed it up with a perfume-drenched note soon after and love quickly blossomed. Sacha moved to Palmer- ston North -- where Nathan was based -- to study nursing. They got engaged in 2008 shortly before she found out she was pregnant. She says her son Eddie was a big surprise but they love being parents. It s not about being the per- fect couple but being in love and happy, she says. We argue and have dis- agreements. But what makes us different is that we have heaps of fun, we laugh every day and we enjoy the little things. Next year Sacha will return to Palmerston North with 18-month-old Eddie to complete her nursing degree while Nathan will stay in Auckland for his work. She says communication, loyalty, love, laughter and effort are keys to a successful relationship. That s pretty much it in a nutshell. Nathan says while the competition has been stressful it has been special. A mission to Antarctica this month closely followed trips to the United States, Afghanistan, Tonga and Samoa. We wouldn t have gone on these dates and done this crazy stuff, Nathan says. I m going to try to get on stage at U2 because the last challenge is called public dis- play of affection. He says support from fam- ily, friends, colleagues and the public has been amazing. I even managed to tell a guy in a dairy and he said: I ve got 200 friends online and I ll ask them to vote . It made my day. Finalists are announced on December 2 and Nathan says it would be the ultimate wed- ding gift. Five runner-up couples will each receive a $5000 Michael Hill gift voucher.
