SECURE YOUR FUTURE NOW Operation Heal cash is flowing in The money is rolling in -- but there s still a way to go. Operation Heal aims to raise $200,000 to buy a high-tech oper- ating microscope for the National Burn Centre. The equipment will be used for much-needed plastic and reconstructive surgery designed to help patients get their lives back on track. The Nor-west News is part of the Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust. We launched Operation Heal earlier this month and have been overwhelmed by the level of public support from our readers. Trust chairman Sir Peter Leitch and his wife Janice kicked things off with a $10,000 contribution that has just been matched with a cheque for the same amount from the Hugh Green Charitable Trust. Corporate and other organis- ations can also get on board by purchasing a table at the charity fundraising dinner being held on December 3 at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre as part of the campaign. The guest speaker will be Prime Minister John Key who will be interviewed on stage by Paul Holmes. Diners will enjoy a superb meal with complimentary beer from Lion Breweries and fine wine from Glengarry in a festive atmosphere. A cheque will be handed over to the National Burn Centre at the end of the function. Tickets cost $1850 plus GST for a table of 10 or $185 plus GST per person. Call Shandall on 531-5910 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Firefighter training burns down house Intense experience: Kumeu firefighters Eugene Sparnon, Aimee Murray, Warren Marshall, Simon Shields and Michael Hutchins experienced important training strategies. Controlled burn: A Taupaki house was burnt down as part of a training exercise for fire crews. By CAROLYN THOMAS Firefighters jumped at the chance to burn down a house. The Kumeu volunteer fire crew were among brigades from across Auckland who took part in the training exercise. It followed the station s 40th anni- versary celebrations the day before. It was awesome training, firefighter Michael Hutchins says. Everyone there got a chance to be involved. Seven fires were lit inside the Taupaki house where furniture was scattered to resemble a lived-in home. The trainers said we only get about six houses offered each year but only about three get done because of positioning, Mr Hutchins says. The house was owned by the Beaumont family who wanted it removed to build a new home.
