IT'S YOUR FUTURE Art gallery keeps grans busy Creative friendship: Artists Lyn Chapman, 70, Annabel Brechelt, 74, Audrey Jenkins, 79, and Jan Scott, 63, have opened an art gallery at the Helensville train station. By CAROLYN THOMAS Age has proved no barrier to four artists from Helensville and Parakai. Energetic grandmothers Annabel Brechelt, Lyn Chap- man, Audrey Jenkins and Jan Scott have opened an art gallery. The grans are in their 60s and 70s. Art on Track is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 3.30pm at the Helensville train station. All are members of Art Kaipara and came up with the idea during painting sessions at each other s homes. I mentioned it to my friends and everybody s face lit up, Annabel says. You ve got to have good exposure as an artist and we re getting it here. Lyn has painted since the 1970s and says it is part of her life. You find that you just can t not do it, Lyn says. Her paintings of African animals and landscapes are influenced by time spent liv- ing in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Former Kumeu resident Audrey moved to the area in 1998. She has dabbled in paint- ing all her life. You put art on the back burner for a while with chil- dren and business, she says. All have sold work and received commissions since the gallery opened in Octo- ber. The train station is a popular stop for tourists. Audrey couldn t believe how quick her painting of a train went. We hadn t even opened yet and were hanging work when a man said, I ll take that , Audrey says. Jan and Lyn are also great- grandmothers. IN BRIEF Cycling tips Are you a bit wobbly on two wheels? Band gets a move on What a blast: Huapai-Kumeu Lions member Peter Orr, second right, hands over a cheque to Kumeu Brass Band member Kate Remfry with support from band members, from left: Tim Owens, Neville Thomas, Brian Gilbert, Brian Miller and Eric Cole. A new place to practice is on the cards for the Kumeu Brass Band thanks to the Huapai-Kumeu Lions suc- cessful book fair. New facilities will be shifted to replace the existing building on Waita- kere Rd which was too small for the band. The costs associated with the shifting and renovations have been eased by the Lions donation of $2750. The Kumeu band is a valuable and significant group in our community offering musical learning experience for young and old and entertainment that we can all enjoy, Lions presi- dent Gary Moss says.
