The team at Helensville Library, particularly librarian Sally Hardwick, has earned a bunch of flowers from Kumeu's Wild at Heart Flowers and Gifts for their wonderful service. I have lived in Helensville for the past 15 years and never once have any of the staff, including volunteers, been anything less than help- ful and cheerful in their work when I have used library services,'' Donna Kerridge says. Even with the un- certainties associated with potential library changes due to the establishment of the Auckland supercity they remained positive and had many of us looking forward to the prospect of becoming part of a larger organisation and therefore the added library resources that would be made available to our outpost. On several occasions I have witnessed Sally suspend her lunch break to help someone in the library rather than fob them off or ask them to come back later. Sally volunteers her time and expertise in our community as an active mem- ber of the Helensville Lions Club and for associated fundraising activities. She has also initiated and co-ordinated interest groups within our community at the library, organising events and guest speakers and being on hand in her own time to make sure all is well. I often hear from others in our community how helpful the team at the library are, including our council office which used to be integrated. She makes everyone wel- come and is often overheard connecting people in our small town with similar interests. On a personal note, Sally has been an absolute asset to me assisting with my tertiary studies when I have had diffi- culties. She always keeps an eye out for new publications that might be of interest to me. For the past three years my fellow university students have looked on with envy at the support Sally has afforded me, and indirectly them as well, pointing out the avail- ability of library resources that were previously unknown tous.IknowthatIamnotthe only one she does this type of thing for. Thank you Sally. People like you are valuable in com- munities like ours and you are a great ambassador for the new Auckland city service net- work.'' IN BRIEF Gifts needed Help children enjoy this Christmas by dropping off presents to our Nor-west News office. The annual appeal is for Barnardos Waitakere families. Area manager Vicki Khoo says it has been tough economically for families. Please drop off presents to the office above Kumeu Garden Centre by lunchtime, December 17. Call 412-8589. Kumeu meeting A discussion on the 10 most important issues affecting Kumeu/Huapai is on the agenda for the Kumeu/Huapai Residents and Ratepayers Association on December 14 from 7.30pm at Kumeu Community Centre. Board members will also report and funding will also be talked about. Christmas help Extreme hardship for families is prompting Helensville Women and Family Centre to set up a Christmas appeal. The centre provides support to over 1500 women and families in the South Kaipara each year. The centre is collecting non-perishable food and children's gifts. There is a trolley at Helensville Woolworths store or donations can be delivered to 51 Commercial Rd, between 10am to 2pm.
