The mystery of the Christmas star Follow the star: The planetarium show looks at celestial events around Christmas. At this time of year it's nice to think about the real meaning of Christ- mas. Yes, it is a well earned break from work, allowing you to spend quality time with your loved ones. But Christ- mas is also a significant religious event and a time for members of the Christian faith to wors- hip and give thanks. Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth on the 25th of December. The story of his birth is well known and loved. Is it true though? Religion and science don't always have an easy relationship. Astronomy is the sci- ence of observing and measuring objects in the night skies and using those measurements and observations to form and test theories about how our solar system, our gal- axy and the universe works. With modern techno- logy it is now possible to look back in time and recreate what the night sky would have looked like at a certain period in history. The Mystery of the Christmas Star' is a planetarium show at the Stardome Observatory that does just that. This show proposes some astronomical theories for celestial events recorded around the estimated time of the birth of Jesus that may have been the fabled Star of Bethlehem. Each theory is dis- cussed and explained in detail, with beautiful imagery and choir music featuring in the show. The date of Jesus' birth is also examined, with theories put for- ward for an alternative birth date. If you are interested in history, astronomy, sci- ence or religion this is a great show for you. The recently refurb- ished Stardome is a great place to take the family this December. 'The Mystery of the Christmas Star' plays at 7pm Wednesday to Sunday throughout the month. See stardome.org. nz or phone 624-1246 for more information.
