Follow the coastal travels of a crew of surf lifeguards who are circumnavigating New Zea- land. Jointly led by Muriwai members Ash Matuschka and Andrew Lancaster, the team of six inflatable rescue boat drivers are doing the chal- lenge to celebrate the national centenary of surf life saving. Other members are Auckland-based Jason Har- vey, Blake Ingram, Matt Bus- well and Antony Morgan of Papamoa. History will be in the mak- ing as the group expects to take 40 days to complete their trip in two specially modified inflatable rescue boats. Consisting of 32 legs, the crew touches down at both popular surf beaches and some of the most remote coastal locations. We decided as a small group of clubbies that we wanted to attempt something significant to pay tribute to the centenary,'' 24-year-old Matuschka says. For us, it's about celebrating today's generation of lifeguards and looking ahead towards the next 100 years. While the organisation consists of 73 individual clubs, as lifeguards we're all united by the same thing -- we're in it for life.'' Completing the journey will not be easy -- it will mean 40 back-to-back days of being soaked by sea spray, confined to a 3.8-metre inflatable boat for hours at a time and battling the elements. The longest stretch will be from Fiordland, across Foveaux Strait, around Stew- art Island to Bluff -- one of the world's most isolated and diffi- cult stretches of water. The team also includes res- erve driver Jason Glew and a safety manager, mechanic, doctor and land-based support person. At all times throughout the trip, two inflatable rescue boats will be on the water to act as each other's safety craft. Tracking equipment will be installed in both boats, allowing remote tracking by the land-based support team and other maritime safety operations. Matuschka knows the team has a huge challenge ahead of them. Any lifeguard knows when you're up against the elements, you're completely at nature's mercy,'' he says. We also know to expect the unex- pected. We want this voyage to capture the spirit of who surf lifeguards are.''
