Financial nous and hard work has paid off for Kumeu resident Simon Hassan. Online journal Finan- cialAlert has named him Person of the Year 2010. The accolade recog- nises his contribution to the New Zealand financial planning pro- fession. It follows Mr Hassan's work consulting govern- ment during the lead-up to industry regulation changes. He is also heavily involved with profes- sional bodies and setting training programmes -- all alongside running his own advisory practice Hassan and Associates and lecturing students in financial planning at Massey University. FinancialAlert pub- lisher Graham Rich says it has been a tough year for financial advisers. He is a very worthy member of the select group of now five Finan- cialAlert Persons of the Year,'' Mr Rich says. He says Mr Hassan is a stalwart to the indus- try and works tirelessly. Mr Hassan's profes- sional memberships include the Financial Planning Standards Board, the Institute of Directors and the Insti- tute of Financial Advisers of which he is a former president. For many years, he has been integral in the development of best practice professional standards for advisers,'' Mr Rich says. Principal of financial advisory firm Stuart and Carlyon Deborah Carlyon agrees. As well as running a business, Simon has tirelessly, passionately, and enthusiastically con- tinued offering his know- ledge as a professional financial adviser to others on all levels in this profession,'' she says. Washed up A dead 11.5 metre adult sperm whale which washed ashore north of Muriwai Beach around Christmas Day is being DNA tested. That will help deter- mine its sex and also build a picture of the population. The whale probably died about two days before coming ashore north of Rimmer Rd and had apparent shark bites, a Conservation Department spokes- person says. Iwi rep- resentatives removed the jaw, mainly used for carving. The whale, already decomposing, was left there. Project Jonah volun- teers unsuccessfully searched the coastline after reports of another whale or whales in the area.
