Bruce Ritchie Principal Collective stands up for fitness Healthy goal: Green Prescription programmes provided by the Tu Tangi Ora South Kaipara collective include popular aqua classes at Parakai's Aquatic Park. By RANI TIMOTI Zest for life: Zumba sessions continue to be a favourite for this year's collective programme, encouraging parents and children to get fit together. Working together: Community-minded volunteers passionate about helping people increase their healthy exercise make up the Tu Tangi Ora South Kaipara collective. A South Kaipara collec- tive is stretching further to make a difference in its community. Tu Tangi Ora -- Stand Up and Cry For Life -- aims to encourage residents of all cultures and walks-of-life to increase their healthy exercise. The collective is made up of community-minded volunteers, including four teachers, and has been going since 2008. More funders are coming to local groups like us to implement programmes as we can provide for local needs,'' co-ordinator Mihi Shaw says. A major goal this year is to start plans to have a sport and recreational facility in Helensville. A public meeting will be held to begin discus- sions. New initiatives include a community active co-ordinator who will organise events and programmes on behalf of the collective and a com- munity active facilitator, who can provide support to schools, marae and other groups in areas such as fitness training and ball skills. Now affiliated with the national waka ama body to compete in national races, the collective is looking for prospective members to train in two waka on the Kaipara River. The collective is get- ting bigger and we have real ideas which turn into practical projects to serve our community,'' Mrs Shaw says. People are coming for more help, support and ideas. Others are ringing up from outside of South Kaipara wanting to use our ideas.'' Events to run this year, funded by Waite- mata District Health Board, include a touch tournament, fun run, the traditional Maori game called Ki O Rahi and a tag competition. The board will also fund programmes for families who lack in physical activity and nutritional information in the form of Tamariki Ora and He Ara Ano. Activities continuing again this year include the popular and success- ful Green Prescription programmes featuring ta'i chi and aqua classes. Zumba sessions will also encourage parents and children to get fit together. People here can see we are very serious about the health and well-being of our chil- dren and our com- munity,'' Mrs Shaw says. Last year, the collec- tive won a Community Excellence Award from Harbour Sport, which celebrates those who have been significant to sport and recreation in the Harbour region. Waitemata District Health Board provided funding for the Healthy Eating Healthy Activity programme which pres- ented a have a go day for families to try different sports. The collective also hosted its inaugural sports awards attracting applications from around the nor-west. The popular touch competition at Rautawhiri Park is now in its third year after it was revived by Tu Tangi Ora under the Push Play Neighbourhood banner. They also funded and supported junior touch teams. Along with their own newsletter of infor- mation about activities in the region, the collec- tive have run major walks of various lengths including a Maori-guided hike up Mt Auckland.
