Prolific programmes including a vegetable garden at Country Bears Early Childhood Centre were checked out during a visit by Prime Minister John Key. Magic pond water'' is a reason the garden of melons, corn, lettuce, carrots and other vegetables are so lush. Mr Key says he has little time to tend to his gar- den because by the time he gets round to watering things have died''. Mr Key was quizzed by the kids and says his favourite foods include roast chicken, curry, cake and ice- cream. Operating since February, 1993, Country Bears was one of the first purpose-built child care centres on 10 acres situ- ated in wide open spaces, trees and fields. Since then, the facility has developed alongside its community, dealing with many hundreds of families and providing employment for local residents. Centre manager Rebecca Dudley has been with Country Bears from the beginning and is still teaching. Last year, all teachers attended the Reggio Amelia Conference, reinforcing their philos- ophy and practices. We have seen babies grow with us and leave for school, develop into young people who now bring their own children to us, what a great feel- ing that is,''founders Shaun and Rita Eastell say.
