Photo: CAROLYN THOMAS By CAROLYN THOMAS POLICE have community patrols at Muriwai Beach carparks to thank for an arrest. A 32-year-old man was apprehen- ded at the Maori Bay carpark on January 20 following ongoing problems of thefts from vehicles. Two volunteer patrollers alerted police to the man's suspicious behaviour. Nor-west Community Patrol sec- retary Philippa Davies says it is a great result. Muriwai was being hit all the time,'' she says. It just got so bad and it had to be addressed.'' Items found in the man's car have been linked to other crimes. The patrols started in December with volunteers working rosters and liaising with police. In six weeks we've got someone,'' she says. It's already working.'' Phillipa says the group appreciates support shown by locals, beachgoers, surfers and the park ranger. Everyone has started to notice our presence.'' The 34 year-old has been involved with the organisation for about seven months. She says curbing the problem at Muriwai is a priority. You want people to come and enjoy the beach,'' she says. We're around here and we're keeping an eye out.'' Kumeu community constable Mike Collins says the patrollers are doing an excellent job. He says the man is known to police and it was good to make the arrest. They watched him, knowing that we were on our way,'' he says. It was an excellent result.''
