IT'S YOUR FUTURE Dangerous gas cylinder fire By CAROLYN THOMAS A small gas cylinder fire kept the Kumeu fire brigade at an Old Railway Rd commercial site for nearly four hours on February 7. Deputy chief Stephen Sparnon says extreme cau- tion is needed when a cylin- der is involved. That was a big one for us,'' Mr Sparnon says. The acetylene cylinder was being used to power steel cut- ting equipment. Acetylene is the worst thing you want you want to be dealing with,'' he says. It's so volatile. Some will explode and head skywards,'' he says. Mr Sparnon says an area of 100 metres had to be evacuated with nearby oxy- gen and LPG cylinders also causing concern. You want it to burn itself out.'' Water tankers from Silverdale and Shelly Beach brigades and Whenuapai airbase has to be called in. Mr Sparnon says 70,000 litres of water was used. Kumeu crews attended a power line fire in Muriwai, a vehicle down a bank on Mill Flat Rd and a transformer blaze in Huapai last week. Classic family fun day Sandy fun: Families at Waimauku Playcentre look forward to showing their facilities and activities to visitors on their February 26 family day. Photo: RANI TIMOTI By RANI TIMOTI Old-style games and relaxing on hay bales are part of the fun expected for a family day hosted by Waimauku Playcentre. The event is on February 26 from 10.30am to 2pm and follows last year's gala. We really envision this to be a festival and to signify what playcentre is about,'' mum Kirsty Cooke says. Classic games for both children and adults will be in action featuring apple bobbing and three-legged, sack, egg-and-spoon races topped with prizes and medals. There will also be hot rod cars on display, pony rides, live music, food and produce stalls, raffle, lolly scramble and a white elephant. Children can try out the various playcentre activities and equipment from play dough to dress-ups. After checking out all the venue, visitors can relax with picnics at nearby Glasgow Park which will have hay bales to set the perfect country atmosphere. Proceeds from the event go towards the playcentre's kitchen and bathroom upgrade. The established group which began in 1973, has about 45 families with parents and extended family of all ages involved. Rather than just child- care, it supports the whole family,'' mum Tulsi Parsons says. The relationship the chil- dren develop with adults is really lovely,'' Kirsty says. Under Te Akoranga Playcentre Association, the main strength is acknowl- edging and supporting parents as the first and most important educators of their children. It really is a wonderful place for all members of the family to build life-time friendships,'' Jacqui Callaghan, president of the association says. Branches are co- operatively managed and supervised by parents with support from experienced association and federation personnel. Families and other playcentres are welcome to the Waimauku day at 69 Muriwai Rd. View www.Playcentre.org.nz or phone 411-8256.
