It pays to get a quote before any work is done to be sure you know what the end product will be. Whether you're getting someone in to fix the oven or you're taking a bag in to get a zip fixed, get a quote or an esti- mate to avoid a nasty surprise. Having a record of what you agreed will be handy if there are problems later. There's no job too small to get an estimate. You can get one by just asking something along the lines of around about how much will this cost?'' An estimate is just how much they expect it will cost and not an exact number. You can ask the tradesperson to let you know if it's going to cost more, so you can decide if it's worth it. For a bigger job you should get a written quote. A quote says that the tradesperson will do the job for a certain price. They can't charge more than the price you are quoted, unless you agree to the extra amount. Before you get a quote, ask if you will be charged for it. Because it takes time and skill to provide a quote, tradespeople do sometimes charge for it. The quote should include what work is to be done, start and finish dates, cost of material and whether the total price includes GST. Even if you didn't get a quote or estimate, the Consumer Guarantees Act says the seller must complete the work with reasonable skill and care, within a reasonable time and at a reasonable price. How to get a quote Decide exactly what you want done and when you need it done by. Contact at least three people, give them the same information and ask for a written quote. Decide which quote you will accept. Look at the price, the quality of material used and how long the job will take. Tell the successful person they have the job. Don't pay a large deposit, and definitely don't pay the total amount before the job is finished. When everything is complete, check that the terms of the quote have been met, then pay up. Keep all the paper- work -- quotes, invoices, receipts. For more information about consumer rights, visit www.consumer affair.govt.nz or the Citizen's Advice Bureau.
