The project’s trust has also began a selective tendering process to identify a lead contractor and determine a market- driven build cost. Trust chairman Tim Jago says he is confident $3 million is now avail- able to his organisation – with more hopefully to come from other funding sources. With cost estimates around $4.3m, Mr Jago says the project is sig- nificantly larger than comparable surf club developments elsewhere. However, the trust’s decision to provide Muriwai with its long- awaited community cen- tre and to house several other local groups has added nearly $2m to the price tag. Strong support has already come from Auck- land Council and its predecessors together with the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board for the combined surf club and community functions. With more than $1m still to be secured, the trust is applying to major funding organis- ations and partnering with the Muriwai Pro- gressive Association to achieve a targeted $500,000 contribution from the nor-west com- munities. Built specifically for Muriwai’s volunteer lifeguards, facilities will include a state-of-the-art patrol operations base and emergency medical station, improved storage for life saving equipment, vehicles and rescue boats and a work- shop. A club lounge, bunkroom accommo- dation and kitchen facili- ties will be available for members, visiting school and community groups. A classroom with audiovisual equipment will provide an education area to enable an inter- national centre of excel- lence for lifeguard train- ing. Other groups support- ing the development include the Muriwai Sports Fishing Club, Maori Bay Board Riders, a parents group provid- ing weekly pre-school activities and several art and hobby groups. They will be able to use meet- ing rooms and a com- munity lounge with seat- ing up to 200 people, store equipment and dis- play memorabilia. Casual hire by outside groups will be available. Jogging for health Nor-west residents are welcome to pick up their fitness and be motivated with the Massey joggers and walkers. The group meets Sundays 8am, and Wednesdays 6pm at Grenville Drive, Massey Athletics Clubrooms.
