Leaping into the limelight was worth all the hard work for Kaukapakapa showjumper Danielle Maurer. The 19-year-old won the young rider series final class at the New Zealand Showjumping Series Final Show in Taranaki. Up against 17 other combinations, she ended up taking the series by more than 100 points. Her decisive win was followed by runner-up Rachel McGregor of Cam- bridge on Kabo Benny Boy and third placegetter Kim Winks of New Ply- mouth on Elle Supre. This follows Maurer's biggest win of her career with the New Zealand Grand Prix title at last month's New Zealand Showjumping Champion- ships. On her 9-year-old gelding Blue Rinse, Maurer was one of the favourites as the national young rider champion in 2010. There were 21 horse and rider combinations around New Zealand who started the three-day competition. Maurer was in 7th position after the first class before forging through the second day by jumping two clear rounds to move into second behind leader Mathew Dickey. Coming into the final day, the five at the top of the table were less than a rail apart. Dickey had an unlucky round to finish on 20 penalties to knock him out of contention for the overall title. Maurer finished her two rounds for the third day on 4 penalties, which was enough to take victory ahead of trainer Sally Steiner and Northland rider Vicki Wilson. Maurer and Blue Rinse also finished as runners-up in the National Young Rider Championship at the same show. With a partnership of four years, the dynamic duo spent the winter of 2009 training together in Australia under ex-Olympian Jamie Coman. Maurer started showjumping from a young age, first representing New Zea- land on ponies in 2004 and progressing through the pony grand prix ranks to horse grand prix. Fans of horses are welcome to an equine training and handling day on March 27 at Muriwai-based Lincoln Stud. The event is from 10am to 4.30pm at 15 Motutara Rd. It also features the Old MacDonald Travelling Farm with their farm animals for children to meet. All proceeds go towards the Canter- bury earthquake appeal. Rugby challenge: A combined team of Helensville and Kumeu premier sides is getting ready for its first season. Pioneers lead the way in pre-season Gut-busting training is preparing rugby players to join forces for a new era in the nor-west. The new Western Pioneers team is an amalgamation of the Helensville and Kumeu premier sides. The impressive array of 40 players is determined to do well in its inaugural year under the watchful eye of fitness trainer Hugh McGahan. The squad will endure pre-season games and a training weekend at Waiouru military camp ready for the North Harbour competition on April 2. Head coach Lindsay Ellery has assembled mainly nor-west lads, several hard-running Fijians and three United Kingdom imports who are playing club rugby before they support their home teams in the Rugby World Cup. A highlight will be the team's official launch on March 25 at the Kumeu clubrooms, where Prime Minister John Key and Helensvil- le's first All Black Frank Bunce will attend. The team's major sponsor, Century 21 Burmester Realty, will be formally intro- duced along with the unveiling of the team's playing strip.
