Fielding a competitive premier team is the goal of Helensville and Ku- meu rugby clubs who have united their top players. The launch of the Western Pioneers was celebrated at the Kumeu Rugby Club with speeches from Prime Minister John Key and former All Black Frank Bunce. The premier and senior first teams will play under the Western banner, while other senior teams continue to play for the two individ- ual clubs. Helensville Rugby Club chairman Richard Kidd says the joint ven- ture is a step forward for local rugby. We ve been bitter enemies on the playing field over the years, but now we re joining together for the better- ment of rugby. Western Pioneers coach Lindsay Ellery says club rugby is in decline. We re dying if we don t combine. The Western Pioneers new kit was modelled by players at the launch. It combines Helens- ville s red and yellow with Kumeu s green and white. There was an auction of All Blacks gear, with Mr Key bidding $1300 for Tony Woodcock s signed training kit. The Western Pioneers play their first game against East Coast Bays on Saturday. -- Richard Meadows is an AUT journalism student Big Col surfing quest An annual surf com- petition at Maori Bay in Muriwai swirls into action on April 2. The Big Col McNeil event starts at 7.30am with pre- entries only due to limited numbers. All proceeds go to the Christchurch earthquake appeal. Maori Bay Board- riders Club presi- dent Lachlan Mit- chell says while the focus is on fun and participation, com- petition for the coveted trophy is fierce, providing spectators with a high standard of surfing. Categories in- clude open men s, open women s, under 16 boys and under 16 girls. The event is fol- lowed by an auction evening at the surf club and the compe- tition prize giving.
