International experience is part of the flavour of the new winemaker at Kumeu s Soljans Estate Winery. Andy Nicole has come from Kurow/Pasquale wines in the Waitaki Valley, North Otago. Starting his career with a postgraduate dip- loma in viticulture and oenology from Lincoln University in 1999, Andy began in the world of wine with his first cellar hand role at Church Rd in Hawkes Bay. He then headed over- seas to his first foreign vintage in Oregon in 2000 and since then has travelled to France, Italy and Australia experienc- ing different wine- making cultures. His experiences will come in handy at Soljans. Managing director Tony Soljan says their wines are gaining momentum in many overseas markets, par- ticularly in China. Andy s arrival at Soljans is the next chap- ter in our long wine- making history and I m looking forward to work- ing with him, Tony says. Andy is excited to work with Tony who is highly respected in the New Zealand wine industry. It s also a great oppor- tunity to be back work- ing in Auckland and to put my passion and dedi- cation for winemaking into the Soljans wines. Sparkling wines are one of their enviable strengths and this is an area I am interested in working in, Andy says.
