Visit for details: Multi-talented: Landscape painter Katrina Collins is taking part in a members' exhibition at the Kumeu Arts Centre. Photo: CAROLYN THOMAS From boatbuilding to painting By CAROLYN THOMAS Boatbuilding seems a world away from landscape paint- ing but not for Riverhead art- ist Katrina Collins. The mum-of-three worked as a fibreglass laminator on launches for a decade before having children and then painting. Katrina is taking part in Kumeu Art Centre's latest members' exhibition Summers End. It is on from 10am to 3pm daily until Saturday behind the Huapai library. She loved doing art at secondary school but didn't pick up a paint brush again until about six years ago. She says painting is addictive. I just can't stop sometimes and it takes all my time,'' Katrina, 45, says. You can see it going somewhere and it gets exciting.'' Her work is displayed at places including Gallery Q and the Kumeu Visitor Infor- mation Centre on State High- way 16 and the Art Stop Cafe in Helensville. Katrina also works part time as a cook and a cleaner. She joins her partner on surfing trips up north so she can take photos for her paintings. The time of the day is important for lighting, she says. She also does portraits and says she enjoys seeing reactions to her work. When I see there faces,'' she says. Some people have been in tears almost.'' Watch for bogus scrap dealers Scrap metal hunters could be targeting nor-west rural properties. The police warning follows the recovery of several thou- sand dollars worth of scrap metal from areas including Riverhead. A 30-year-old Avondale man has been arrested on burglary and theft charges and is due to appear in court on April 28. Kumeu police sergeant Mick Rickards says farmers and rural residents should be vigilant and ask for identifi- cation if anyone comes look- ing for scrap metal. Contracting and farming equipment including batter- ies and water pumps have been stolen. Mr Rickards asks owners to secure their properties and take batteries and other items away from easily accessible roadsides. Even underground copper cabling is not safe with incidents of people digging them up at night. Police want information if anyone is seen doing this. Police are looking for a man who took this blue 2009 Yamaha off-road motorbike from Helensville on Sunday. He is described as a European in his 40s, 1.80m tall, of thin build with sharp features. His tattoos include a black flame or similar on his neck and red and blue markings on his legs. One of his hands appeared to be yellow. He was wearing blue cut-off jeans, a khaki fishing hat and a black sweatshirt with FOX written on the front. Phone constable Neil Calder at the Helensville police station on 420-8967.
