Feedback has been posi- tive following community information meetings in Riverhead about the public water and wastewater system being built by Watercare. The system will sup- port the growing popu- lations of Riverhead and neighbouring Kumeu- Huapai. Once the new waste- water pipeline is com- pleted, residents can pump all household sewage off their property into the main pipeline transferring it to a treat- ment plant for proper, more environmentally friendly disposal. This system is known as Pressurised Waste- water Collection (PWC) where each house in the area will have a heavy duty grinder pump sys- tem installed. Once connected, resi- dents can permanently shut down their septic tanks and reclaim the land used for effluent disposal. This will also allow many properties to be developed in the region. The meetings were hosted by Albany-based Ecoflow Ltd, New Zealand's sole distrib- utor for EOne grinder pumps. The business has been working with the former Rodney District Council for the past four years. Karl Sentch, project manager, says there was a good turnout with a range of questions from residents and interested parties. They hope to host more community meetings as Watercare continues its building stages. The system like Environment One (EOne) is nothing new. The American company originated in the 1960s and has since been pro- viding cost effective wastewater solutions to councils. It is ideally suited to areas which are con- sidered difficult which have characteristics such as flat, high water table and rocky. Kumeu-Huapai is cur- rently being supplied and installed with150 systems in residential and commercial areas. The project was implemented by the for- mer Rodney District Council to replace the existing failing under- ground gravity network last year. Ecoflow's first project was in Point Wells cater- ing for 160 properties, commissioned in 2008. Jon McGettigan of Ecoflow says residents have experienced a huge change to the water estu- ary water quality and open stormwater drains no longer smell. They are now scat- tered from the Far North to Dunedin providing reliable cost effective sewer systems for townships previously on septic tanks.
