The government is trying to find the next of kin of 20 such servicemen buried in the cemetery. Photo: STEPHEN FORBES By STEPHEN FORBES The search is on to find the relatives of 20 servicemen buried in Waikumete Cemetery who served in World War One and Two. Culture and Heritage Ministry spokeswoman Margaret Marks says the government is looking at repairing their graves this summer. But before the work can be carried out the ministry has to find the families of the deceased to get their permission. And Mrs Marks says looking for the families of people killed in World War One isn't easy. Because it's quite a major project we thought it was important that we contact the families,'' Mrs Marks says. Cemetery manager Daniel Sales says he's been working closely with the ministry to find the affected families. We need to contact the next of kin,'' he says. So we've written to every one of the last known addresses and we've been in contact with the local RSAs.'' Mr Sales says the work will involve putting down all new concrete plinths, cleaning the headstones of moss and lichen and re-engraving any which had fallen into disrepair. Thompson Memorials has been contracted to carry out the work. Mr Sales says the repairs will be fully funded by the ministry and there is no cost to the families. We're keen to main- tain them to a higher standard and we want to continue that,'' he says. We're hoping to start the work at the end of the year,'' Mr Sales says. The Culture and Heri- tage Ministry is respon- sible for the graves of servicemen and women who died during war time, while Veterans Affairs funds the upkeep of the graves of war veterans. Contact Margaret Marks on (04) 496-6343 or email her at margaret.marks@mch. govt.nz if you can help with her work.
