Fun on the bus: Country Bears’ school holiday programme visits are yet another way for ex- preschoolers to build on friendships. Loads of fun and adven- ture was had at Country Bears recent school hol- iday programme ‘Adven- ture Bears’ which kick- started with a trip to the Smurf Movie. This was followed by a visit to the Museum, Chipmunks and Kiwi Valley. Prior to the school holidays, Country Bears secured one out of 10 sessions with In2it’s ‘Street Cricket’ run by Oscar Holiday Programmes. In2it ‘Street Crew’ are trained or training in Sport and Recreation and have completed an Auckland Cricket coaching level course. During their cricket session in Country Bear’s very own paddock, enthusiastic Adventure Bears had the oppor- tunity to make their own sports equipment includ- ing cricket bats to take home. They all participated in fun and interactive games that informally introduced them to the basics of cricket. The emphasis of the session was to remind children that any space is a play space and that ‘Street Cricket’ can be played anywhere, with equipment sourced from our environment. This philosophy fits well with Country Bears overall aim to encourage a passion for the out- doors through sport, walks and just being out- side. Adventure Bears is offered to the children and families of Country Bears, yet another way for children, once they go off to school, to maintain the friendships and con- nections that many have built over the first five years of their lives. Country Bears owners Rita and Shaun Eastell contend, ‘‘As with every- thing that we do here, we firmly believe in the benefits of strong bonds and community spirit. ‘‘We have been an important component of the greater Kumeu com- munity since our incep- tion in February 1993 – yes, the ‘original’! ‘‘We still maintain our belief that a close relationship between home and centre will support a quality early childhood experience, that will in turn, increase children’s life- long capacity to learn.’’ Country Bears provide the environment to encourage cooperative learning, logical think- ing, creative expression and exploration, all important components of children’s successful development. Come on up sometime – Kylie or Rita look for- ward to meeting you. ❚ Country Bears is at 79 Oraha Rd, Kumeu. Phone 412-8055. Visit the website www.countrybears.co.nz for more information.
