The Sparc lifetime achievement volunteer award for Harbour Sport was presented to John Thomas. Andrew Lancaster has also been elected to the SLSNZ board as a real tribute to the leadership programmes Muriwai has in place. A busy surf lifesaving season is expected for the Bethells and the Muriwai clubs. Six Bethells crews made it home in the 90 Mile Beach IRB race with Mason's Mistakes taking the Bethells 90 Mile IRB Trophy. The club has a huge force in surf boats ready for action. Club president Dave Comp, who was volun- teer of the year, says the club is aiming to defend its best patrolled beach trophy for the northern region this season and is targeting the club of the year. The club is also plan- ning to run a number of training and refresher courses. At Muriwai, 24 juniors aged 14-18 attended an annual lifeguard camp to refresh their skills for summer, develop a team spirit and ease their transition from junior surf to senior surf. Surf lifesavers are even more finely tuned with their lifesaving methods thanks to the national pool champion- ships. The highly competitive event in Hamilton ranged from swimming under obstacles, rescuing manikins, tube rescuing and swimming with fins. Muriwai placed second out of the northern region clubs and 14th overall. Go to www.thesurf clubatmuriwai.org to make a donation towards construction of the new surf life club/community facility.
