Tuesdays till 6.30pm ---New Patients Welcome --- PH 09 420 8983 16 Commercial Rd, Helensville 4306888AA Guide for bike riders The NZ Transport Agency wants to hear from nor-west motor- cyclists to help make roads safer for riders. The draft Safer Journeys for Motor- cycling guide has been prepared with input from the Motorcycle Safety Levy Advisory Council, road controlling authorities and the ACC. The goal is to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes involving motorcyclists on New Zealand roads by guiding those who design, build and maintain them. The agency also wants to hear from individual riders interested in improving motorcycling safety. NZTA chief executive Geoff Dangerfield says the risk of a motorcyclist being killed or injured on New Zealand roads is 18 to 20 times higher than that of a car driver. The guide outlines practical steps to boost motorcycle safety. Send in comments by January 27 with the final version expected to be out in March. Firefighters busy with scrub fire Difficult terrain and access to a scrub fire on a Mosquito Bay cliff at South Head have kept firefighters busy. Initially seen on Saturday from around 2pm, about 20 firefight- ers and a helicopter were aiming to contain it. Nearly a hectare of scrub was burned but the fire was stopped before it could threaten a nearby bach, Helensville fire chief Ian Osborne says. Wind fanned the blaze attended by Helensville and Shelly Beach firefighters with a support vehicle from Silverdale and a Skyworks helicopter with monsoon bucket. The cause has yet to be determined, although a fish smoker has been suggested. Organisers in the nor- west are invited to apply for funding for major events. Auckland Tour- ism, Events and Econ- omic Development is calling for sponsorship requests for the district. Applications close on February 5 with events needing to be held from July 1 to June 30 next year. Sponsorship decisions will be released between March and May 2012.
