By RANI TIMOTI A new booklet provides visitors with a short and sweet history lesson about Helensville. Why Helensville? is a easy-to-read A4 publi- cation, ideal for travel- lers or school groups. It is compiled by Helensville and District Historical Society mem- ber Laurel North with extracts taken from the district s historic book Men Came Voyaging by C M Sheffield. When I ve travelled, I ve got information and brochures picked up about the areas I ve passed through. People don t want a big textbook to carry off, the former school teacher says. It features facts and figures on Helensville and the southern Kai- para, photos and a list of questions. I thought about some of the questions I would be asking about the area. The booklet is avail- able at the Helensville Museum for $6. Meanwhile in keeping with the district s strong heritage theme, the Helensville Railway Station Trust is planning to expand its display of historical artifacts. It now has a small room at the station, but wants to have a new purpose-built base to fit a working railway model and other memorabilia, pictures and items. Kaukapakapa village centre gets Rodney Local Board support Plans for a new village centre in Kaukapakapa have Rodney Local Board s qualified support. A resource consent application has been received for the con- struction of a village centre includ- ing a service station, restaurant, supermarket, shops, offices, com- mercial premises and live-work units. The village centre proposal is a great starting point for Kau- kapakapa, Rodney Local Board deputy chairman Steven Garner says. However, there are some reservations. Mr Garner says there has been some concern expressed by planners that there is a lack of open space and amenity in the first pro- posal. Official feedback from the local board suggests a number of other concerns like the need for public spaces, stormwater manage- ment and parking.
