What's Up! Now we've caught your eye look at this offer That's what's up! Happy New Year! Offer is for a limited time only Hurry - call us NOW Odd folk: The Big Muffin Serious Band hardly look serious but can play seriously good music with their weird ''instruments''. They're sure to liven up the Auckland Folk Festival at the Kumeu Showgrounds on January 27-30. Big Muffin real serious Wires and Wood: The Auckland bluegrass ensemble won the 2011 Tui Award for best folk album with Over the Moon. Hedge clippers and a carrot kazoo are among instruments'' Hamilton's Big Muffin Serious Band will be using at the 39th Auckland Folk Festival dur- ing Auckland Anniversary weekend. To learn how they make music with them, along with a child's plastic saxo- phone, elephantophone and single- string tea chest bass, you will have to visit the Kumeu Showgrounds from January 27-30 to find out. No popular music is safe from the band's attention, par- ticularly if it's totally unsuitable to the instrumentation, the festival publicity says. Their music is described as tight, energetic and rather funny. If Big Muffin don't pluck your strings this laidback festival has many other performers and workshops to suit a variety of tastes and interests. Guest artists include popular Auck- land four-piece bluegrass group Wires and Wood, another four-piece the Grasshoppers from England, Aust- ralian singer Danny Spooner who plays the concertina and guitar, duo Cy Winstanley and Vanessa Evelyn, and United States born-New Zealand raised singer/songwriter Erin Cole- Baker. Workshops include the odd to the traditional. There's a children's sword dance with Andy Smith, a bodhran and bones'' with Ian Bartlett and a blind date concert'' where performers who may have never met before are paired. Or you can join in Morris dancing, a Shanty Session with The Maritime Crew, Home Brew and Drinking Songs with Lew Black, a wind- jammers session with Pete Grassby, and Appalachian Clog- ging workshop, beginner's ukelele, puppet making, or a Home Made Jam Family Concert. Other concerts, mainly featuring guest artists, are peppered throughout the days and evenings, including the Tui Best Folk Album finalists.
