Axe-wielders will flock to Riverhead on Saturday. They will demonstrate their woodchopping skills from 10.30am at The Riverhead Tavern. Events include the standing block, relay races, double-hand sawing, chainsaw racing and the crowd-pleasing underhand chop. Participants represent North Harbour, Puhoi and Franklin. Woodchopping is a special part of River- head's history and axe- men were characters of the area. One of them was the late Dinny Hoey, a Riverhead legend. Mr Hoey once showed upinataxitoanevent but failed to have any money to pay his fare. He asked the driver to leave the meter running while I go win this race,'' says Campbell Hastie, North Harbour Axemen club secretary. He won and was able to cover the fare with his prizemoney. All the skills on show were used in the early days when bushmen cleared great trees to provide timber for build- ings, boats and export,'' Mr Hastie says. An axe is no match for a chainsaw but there's something about wielding a 6lb razor blade that captures the imagination.'' Visit theriverhead.co.nz for more information.
