With children now heading back to school, Auckland Transport is reminding drivers to slow down around schools. On average, 107 Auckland children are hospitalised each year as a result of incidents involving excessive speed near schools. Research has shown that speeds of 40km/h or less significantly lower the severity of injury if a child is struck by a vehicle. A child hit at 45km/h has a 50 per cent chance of survival. This reduces to a 10 per cent survival rate at 50km/h. Coming up roses Floral fun: Coast Guard members retrieve roses at last year's Running of the Roses in Helensville. Go to nor-westnews.co.nz to see a photo gallery of past events. A tradition is floating back with ardour to Helensville. The successful Running of the Roses event will return on February 10, rais- ing money for community projects, along with the township's profile. It is organised by the Lions Club of Helensville and the Helensville Dis- trict Business Association, from 10am to 3pm, at Mill Rd Reserve. Thousands of roses will be launched into the Kaipara River about 1.30pm, with the first six to cross the finish line dubbed the winners at a special prizegiving. The event will feature a day of festivities including maypole and French dancing, food and craft market stalls, live music, children's games and a scavenger hunt. There are also plenty of prizes which could be won from the giant raffle, ranging from trips to a television and vouchers. Enter the family fun run too which is just under 5km.
