Photo: CARYN WIGMORE Hazards are being sla- shed at an intersection where a young motorcyc- list died. A new sign alerts motorists to the immi- nent junction of Crows and Birdwood roads after Swanson residents petitioned Auckland Transport to boost safety. Their appeals follow the death of 23-year-old Christopher Jonkers after his motorbike and a car collided on November 19.The former Massey High School student died at the scene. Media liaison officer Mark Hannan says Auckland Transport is taking the residents' con- cerns seriously and is committed to improving safety on Birdwood Rd. The transport agency and police are aware of ongoing safety issues along the road which include both alcohol and speed-related crashes. Police are investigating the fatal crash. Vegetation has been trimmed at the junction and an intersection ahead'' sign now stands there. A set of 50kmh repeater signs will be placed on Birdwood Rd 75 metres north of the Birdwood Rd and Glen Rd intersection, he says. Yellow no overtaking'' lines will be installed. Other safety measures being considered include more police enforcement of drink driving and dangerous driving and reviewing the speed limits on the existing 100kmh section of Bird- wood Rd.
